Comprehension
Passage
Plastic bags
are mainly used because of their easy availability and convenience. Plastic
pollution is most visible in developing nations, where garbage collection
systems are often inefficient or nonexistent. Plastic degenerates slowly.
Plastic chunks and dust are not biodegradable as their molecular structure is
too large for microorganisms to swallow. This causes serious environmental and
health problems. Plastic waste blocks drains and gutters, stopping the flow of
rainwater and sewerage, causing an overflow, which becomes the breeding ground
for germs and bacteria resulting many diseases. Birds often mistake shredded
plastic bags for food, filling their stomachs with toxic debris. For hungry sea
turtles, it is nearly impossible to distinguish between jellyfish and floating
plastic shopping bags. The hazards of plastic bags in our rivers, landfills,
and to our resources encompass an imbalance to the overall role that plastic
bags serve. Banning plastic bags is a step towards the right direction in
making a difference in the habits of society, creating a more sustainable
